Hmmm, I sense an opportunity here....

I sense a business opportunity for devoted skiers here.

Let's market ourselves as "house sitters" for those vacation mansion owners. In many cases, these folks only use their places 2 weeks a year. If this is the case, there are plenty of other days (shh, powder days) where I'd be happy to "watch their house" for free. When the weather gets "bad" I'll plow the drive, pickup the paper, fill up the fridge for them and adjust the thermostat before I leave, so when they finally get here (shh, after storm, at the end of a bluebird day) everything will be "perfect" for them....

Opportunity is knocking folks...

It'll probably swing back some day. Sugarbush was once known as "Mascara Mountain" for the jet set that used to hang in the MR Valley all those years ago. It seems kind of funny nowadays. My guess is that Stowe will gentrify for awhile and then the pendulum will swing the other way fifteen or twenty years from now and whatever owners there are will try to market themselves as a serious ski destination for serious skiers.

It's hard to believe how the perception of Stowe has changed to the general public in a relatively short time. It wasn't that long ago (or at least it seems so to me) that it was considered a no fluff, hard core ski destination.
i am a hard core no fluff skier and can't afford stowe. never skied there but looking forward to finally earning some backcountry turns there this year. i may stop by for sunday this weekend which is $15 with two canned goods and i will keep an eye out for VT days. stowe has been about the money for a while now, but the day ticket price is simply outrageous (is that higher than stratton's now? top three in the united states i would imagine?). no ski area in new england is worth that much money, i don't care how much back country access you have from the gondi.

Looks like a good choice considering the snow they recieved in the past 24.

Danm, just read through the whole thread. I always liked Stowe, but never went there much due to price. Now, you can pretty much forget it. $76 is outrageous! They don't even offer the normal 8am-4pm hours?

I had a season pass there last year as a college student. It was 360 (expensive for a college pass). But it was well worth the money for a season pass. Any college pass is a good deal. But now that I'm in the real world the cost of Stowe is going to stop me from going. The closest I'll be getting is hiking from Sterling to Spruce and skiing into the Notch.

Yeah, that is a good deal, but correct if I'm wrong in saying that not only did they have the highest college rate, but they also had the arrogance to put the most blackouts in place  I tried not to laugh when I saw it.

If anyone at Stowe needs me...I'll be skiing at Sunshine...in Banff Alberta.... on 12 new lifts and more mountain and powder than they could ever dream of for $64.95 CAD/$55 USD. I could afford to ski at Stowe every day of every year for the rest of my life. Just because I can....doesn't mean I will. I'm sure that sentiment is echoed by a lot of other people they THINK they should be catering to. :-?

P.S. Alta terrain is every bit as good as Sunshine's for a killer ticket price as well.

P.P.S. On a Sunshine card you get your first and every 3rd day free. You also get disounts on the other days. If you can get one this brings your Full day Adult ticket price down to about $32 CAD/$27 USD. Now that's a freakin deal!!!

That is way too much for a,lift ticket. Two of those = a season's pass @ Wildcat for me.

Yeah they had a ton of blackout days. It was college though so we took it literally and drank till we blacked out . Luckily I had a Smuggs pass too. And that had no blackouts.

I considered it this year, since they were offering it through the law school.

One of the higher prices is one thing. I can handle that.

But to throw in "oh, yeah, you can't come on x,and y, and z," only adds insult to injury. Granted that I would not want to ski at a major resort on those days thanks to crowds, I still don't like restrictions. I want to ski when I want to...especially if paying the higher price. I HAVE skied at Attitash and SB on holiday periods and basically did it to go for a 'couple hours' early in the AM for fun with no great expectations.

So for the a bit more than amount that Stowe demanded for ONE pass with restrictions, I have TWO season passes that is accepted at FOUR places in VT/NH that are less crowded, have great terrain, and have NO blackouts. Go figure  (Burke, Cannon, Sunapee, Gunstock).

for $15, how could i not? simply sensational day. they are not exagerating the snow totals, though that 20" wasn't on any open terrain ;) gondola side of the mountain was were it was at, though the gondi wasn't open. sick sick day.

360 for a steaux pass is a steal ever for a student. it may be more expensive they any other college student pass out there, but how often does any one get to ski steaux as much as they want for 360?

One can't ski 'as much as they want' at Stowe, only on the days that AREN'T blacked out, which were quite a few IIRC.

wrong wording for sure, but...

you wouldn't seem to want to ski those days any ways restriction or not which makes the restrictions a moot point.

Not necessarily true. There was one day my freshman year at SMC (winter of 99-00) that was both a blackout day and a powder day. But yes, that was an exception rather than the normal case.

(On the other hand, I....err...heard...that they might not always look too closely at passes if you stay away from the gondola.)

Kbroderick echoes my point...Murphy's Law says that the best snow will land on days you CAN'T use your pass....btw welcome to the boards, kbroderick

Glad to see another SMC alum on the boards.

Stowe has been playing classical music in the gondi base for a while now, i'd say at least about 5 years. I happen to like that aspect of it. Stowe has always been kind of a dicotomy to me. On one hand, they are kind of ritzy...at least in the way that they see themselves. Stowe has also traditonally been one of the most expensive resorts in the east (granted not THE MOST expensive). However, on the other hand, they also were never really that glitzy or ritzy. Definitely maintaining that hardcore edge at least with regard to the terrain. The base lodge amenities were never that pampering and it maintained that old world ski charm.(although, i'm sure that will change this season with the new spruce peak development).

I always have had a good day whenever I skied stowe....howevever 76 will definitely make me think twice and I'm sure when i make it up that way this season to visit my brother, i'll probably to MRG or the bush.

i believe a list was recently posted on AZ (by billski i believe) that had stowe as the most expensive on the east coast and second most expensive in the country for a weekend lift ticket. not sure how extensive that list is, but it looks like stowe has blown by stratton.
