Those others may have openned (and then closed) first but did they have a significant amount of vertical open?

For the first time on Opening Day, Sugarloaf is offering skiing and riding on the Tote Road trail, with lift access from the SuperQuad, to provide nearly 2 miles of skiing covering almost 2,000 vertical feet.

Cataloochee had to close and if woodbury did too, then Sugarloaf is first in the East to open for the Season

Anybody know for sure if this is the first time sugarloaf has been the first to open for the season?

Going back to the early 1970's, Killington was always the first to open. The new owners pretty much wrecked that when they pulled out the Killington double chair and replaced it with a gondola that didn't have a midstation.

On the All For One Passholders forum, a rep from Sugarloaf stated the following:

You're right. We're not first. That's an error on our part that's been corrected. We're first to open in Maine but more importantly, we're the only resort open in New England.
I took a couple of runs down Tote Road today and it's a serious run that spans nearly 2 miles and almost 2,000 vertical. I can definitely feel it in my legs so it's not anything to laugh at.
I hope we see you skiing at Sugarloaf soon -- tomorrow perhaps!

I don't think the removal of the Peak chair is really that relevant to the loss of Killington's early season title. Besides this year (due to weather), they could have used their current configuration to open well before they chose to do so. The ASC has stated they are only going to open with a top to bottom product that is decent. So, removing the double didnt wreck early season skiing there, the current ownership did in their practice.

Nope. There's been snow on Rime for 3 weeks. There is no way to dowload to the bottom with their current lift configuration so they didn't open. They tried trucking people for a number of years and ended up with a fleet of broken pickup trucks. The current management at Killington has trashed 30 years of brand management for having the best snowmaking in the world. It's no surprise that they were off 19% in skier visits last year. In a lean snow year, Killington has now trained people to go elsewhere.
