The son of my kids' teacher picked the wrong week to have a bad accident at Park City. Punctured lung, fractured vertebrae and a broken rib. Apparently it took patrol right about an hour to get there.
Did they say what trail it was? If it was during the strike, there really wasn't any "far away" terrain open.

Of course if it happened somewhere in the trees you never know I guess.

Apparently it took patrol right about an hour to get there. Gotta wonder if they knew how serious it was. If true, that's a crazy bad response time. Sounds like he'll be okay, but he's still in the hospital out there.
Hope the kid is OK. Was this today, after the strike has been settled ?

He was skiing the last 1/2 day by himself. So his mom doesn’t know where exactly other than I think Canyons side. Apparently other guests were very helpful. Just glad he's going to be fine, and hopefully doesn't mess up his college semester.

Well, I think that's the entire point about the importance of having a mostly tenured staff vs just firing most and starting over. Mountain knowledge is critical for response time and it takes a long time to learn 7k acres.

I remember several years ago watching a 5 year old girl lose control on a long icy patch at Cannon and going flying into the woods at a really high speed. Incredibly frightening to watch. Several people were there and went to the tree line to go in after her. I decided to tuck straight to the bottom to ski patrol. I didn't know the names of the trails at Cannon all too well at the time, but I described the terrain / trails and patrol was like, "Oh, at the usual spot." They knew exactly what I was talking about and had someone on the way immediately. Miraculously the girl threaded the needle of all the trees and snowmaking equipment and was mostly fine. It could have been incredibly bad.

You could be the most skilled surgeon on earth volunteer patroller, but if you don't know where to go to respond in time, it doesn't matter. Ultimately I think this is a big part of the reason Vail came to an agreement with the union vs starting over with new patrol.

i think i know 'the spot'. a snowboard friend who is really into wreckless straightlining went in there and dislocated his shoulder

im terrible with cannon names. but like, a blue groomer that is under the main HSQ and to skier's left there is an unfenced drop off into woods

An hour???
I can get from canyons to pc side in 26 minutes....
Thats waaay to long!
Yup, pretty crazy if true. I'm just third hand info on this one, the girls were very excited to tell me all about it though. I just hope they didn't grill their teacher too much. I know they were trying to figure out where. Do you remember how much was open on the Canyons around New Years? Who knows how many other injuries they were dealing with at the time? I noticed 3 sled required injuries in a very short span of time at Mount Snow over break.

I imagine him looking impossibly young, in a wine cellar with trophies.
