Is the snowmaking at Whiteface better than it was a decade ago? I remember them always taking a long time to get all the snowmaking runs open..

You're kidding me right? You've been taking this authoritarian stance, and talking all of this trash based on a last skier visit of 1997?

WHat people seem to screw up is we dont have it open neither do any of the other resorts. Except Jay.

Killington, Mad River Valley areas, and Stowe get more snow than Whiteface as well, so I'm not sure your statement is quite accurate. I guess I'd have to do a more careful survey though.

MRG just to far behind the time.

K-mart would be in my top 5 if getting laid was a priority when I am skiing, actually number 1.

To far behind the time? What I and many people love about it is the fact that they don't make much snow, don't groom the expert trails, and have low enough lift capacity to keep the trails uncrowded. Do you dislike any of that? Even if you do, and you are entitled to your opinion of course, I don't think your position about how your top five is so obviously right is fair. I would bet most skiers on this board would put MRG in their top five.

As for Killington, if it makes my top five it is 5th. Whiteface and Killington are 5th and 6th. I think Whiteface is better when enough is open, but I think Killington is more likely to have a variety and reasonable quantity of terrain open on any given day. While I don't see why anyone would put it first, I think it has enough strong points to make some people's top 5. (Though I will admit that if I were to ski Sugarloaf and Smuggs, I wouldn't be surprised if one or both knocked Killington down on my list.)

Heck I am probably wrong. I would say that this board is a little MRG bias.

Smuggs would not make the top 5 for the same reason MRG does not.

terrain is the most important aspect when it comes to skiing. snowmaking and lifts also play a role. You can not be on it without the terrain. You are left off without the lifts and snowmaking.

I like the aspects you pointed out. You left out that it takes 69 minutes to get on the single then another 69 to get on the hill. That I can not tolerate. The natural snow is perfect but I like a ski season longer than three months.

Oh BTW we dont have crowded trail over here. Thats not entirely true there a few blue squares that get congested. Never a black diamond. The only time you will ever see a line is between 9:30 and 11:30 on the ghondola. No other lifts. Well thats not true either but I dont use the blue square trail lift.

Anyone who skiis over here chime in if I am wrong

Seems like they've been putting alot of money into snow making euipment in the last few year. They're currentlly working on an expansion that'll put them to there limit space wise also.

It sucks that they're limited to 25 miles of total terrain..but it's cool that they're adding a new lift pod with 1600 vert..Holla

It would be pretty cool if they could raise that limit. There are lots of space for trails on that mountain (not to mention the enitre back side of it!)

I know Whiteface isn't crowded overall (aside from the few intermediate trails you alluded to), but MRG trails are less crowded from my experience. It is true that I have never waited on a line at Whiteface, but that is not the same as empty trails.

Divide lift capacity by acres for a good measure of how crowded trails are on a weekend..

Assuming lifts are fully occupied, yes.. But to the extent I caused this discussion about how crowded trails are, while the difference between MRG and, say, Killington in that respect is huge, MRG's terrain is definitely more important to me than the uncrowded trails. I am not by any means saying that crowded trails is a negative at Whiteface, as I do not believe that to be true. I think MRG is better overall for other reasons (terrain, natural snow, lack of grooming on expert trails).

And I just want to add that I *like* Whiteface. I think the fact that I'm considering at as a potential top-5 in the east should prove that. I hope it doesn't seem to those who rank it higher that I'm trying to bash it, or that I'm just another Sugarbush lover as some seem to label half the people who post here.
