remember how there was always rubber matts on the ramp from the lift down to the lodge? Well not this year....sheet of ice on Saturday, friend slipped broke his wrist.....

Now they put up a metal barrier to block off it and you have to either use the stairs or walk towards D lift and around to get on the 6 pack. Laziness, imcompent, lack of caring etc...What is it with this place? ,

Since they had signs announcing the policy it is not a mistake. Signs just say it is true for credit cards, not that it is not true for debit cards. But I can tell you I avoided the charge using a debit card.

What you describe is illegal in NY?

Would be helpful to see a picture of the sign/policy.

Ok so they are breaking the law. In other news I exceeded 65 mph on the NYS Thruway getting there.

If the sign is still there next time I am there I will do so. Might be this weekend, but if forecast of rain holds up then it will be much longer from now. Maybe sign will be removed if the policy is illegal.

In the mean time, bring a debit card, brown bag it, or enrich Vail and/or its employees.

This is a mute argument, because there isn't a "cash" option.

So can you still tip in cash? I don't like cashless but often pay with a card and tip in cash.
I don't know but I doubt a cashier is going to turn you down if you had them a 5 after paying your bill. But if you pay with a credit card you will get that 18% added on regardless of if you also hand them cash

So is the 18% a tip or a service charge for using a credit card? Do they take green cash to purchase food?
Sorry I misspoke in what you are quoting. they are card only not cash only. They add 18% if your card is a credit card rather than a debit cardm

Which according to NYS is illegal.
I did not say it is legal, I said it is the way they charge people at their cafeteria as of Nov 26 2023 per a sign stating that policy. If you want to tell someone they are doing something illegal look up the NYS attorney general's office. I'll just keep using a debit card when I go there and providing this helpful advice to others

Again I am reporting a fact on the ground at Hunter as of last Sunday. I am not saying what they are doing is either legal or consistent with corporate policy, though I suppose they could argue that imposing a mandatory tip is not the same as charging more. That would more likely work as a corporate rationale than as a legal defense I imagine.

I am curious how you got a response from Vail corporate and whether your interaction with them included persuading them to make Hunter change its policy.

Vail corporate said it is not their policy to charge more for credit card transactions.

Expect on Sat I will be at either Hunter or JF so I can report back as to whether the policy is in place wherever I ski that day - and will take a picture this time of any sign or receipt that shows the policy.

It didn't seem like anything more than the standard VT 9% tax on prepared food was added onto my lunch tab last weekend at Mount Snow. I wasn't paying super attention, but the number seemed pretty close to what I remember from last season. I will pay closer attention this weekend

Nice soft conditions on Hellgate, Minya, Belt and (especially) Overlook today. No sign that anything else is getting readied.

Too bad the Flyer has been out of service since 10am but still no lines.

They removed the sign about the mandatory tip for credit card users but I still paid with debit card to be safe.

It is easily 50 degrees here this afternoon.

Overheard something that suggested the Flyer is cooked for a bit, but who knows.

Today was horrible!!! mountain was like glue. yard sales all over. Saw a sled come in before 9:30. Why are they putting the patrol at risk like this? and the customers.....

Lift broke 2x this season. Fixed again but for how long? And then I believe it was on Friday that the groomer broke down on the parkway so it was closed until they could push/drag it off to the side.

And the mountain has only been opened 11 days!
