When skiing the first time with someone do you have to show them what you have in the tank, first one down the hill, shine in the bumps, first out of the woods, never admit you could use a rest?

I’m somewhat like that although I’ve mellowed with age. It’s not like I’ll challenge someone to a race to the bottom, but I won’t let someone upstage me either (unless they’re just better, if which case there’s nothing I can do about it).

In a nutshell I always try to bring my A game when skiing with someone new. Lots of people say they don’t care, just skiing for the joy of it etc., all good stuff, but I guess I’m kinda competitive.

I’m not a jerk about it and I hope people don’t take it that way. I think most people think I’m OK company on the trail.

I'm not competitive in terms of speed or technique. Compared to the friends I ski with, I'm years away from where they're at. I love skiing or participating in any activity with more skilled individuals. This is my preferred method for learning. The only thing I am competitive with is stamina. I never like being the first one to throw in the towel.

not competitive in skiing at all. I certainly dont want to embarass myself when skiing with new people but i dont worry about being better, worse or the equal.

Now when it comes to other sports, it can be a different story.

I have to admit, I DO get a certain measure of satisfaction eating someone else's lunch when they talk big and don't measure up. But I know there are plenty of skiers who are a heckofalot better than me. And I ski for the fun it brings me -- not for anything else. So no, I'm not competitive.

I always try to bring my 'A' game when skiing with new skiers. Too bad my 'A' game isn't all that impressive.

Very competitive about everything. I don't like losing.

I temper it with good sportsmanship...I always acknowledge skiers or whoever who are just better than me.

I like to ski with folks who are better than me and being competitive is a good way to find out who those folks are.

This statement is crap and says a bunch about you and your skiing.

I read it like this;

If you are good than you are competitive> like the "other sports" you mentioned.

I would deduct that you are a competitive person,

YOU JUST CAN'T COMPETE AT SKIING!

you may have skied with Pat but the statement stands.

his comment comes off as he is competitive if he is good at something and not competitve if he is still learning or can't dominate.

In my opinion you are either comp. or not comp. I don't see a gray area

JimG., competition IS bad. If they keep it up they will receive a 10 yard penalty, suspensions, and possibly a small fine. ;-) That article about CT sports still bothers me.

Go follow him down an East coast bump field. If you can keep up, then you can deduct whatever you want...

I'm only competitive with my younger (11 months) brother who I grew up racing with. He generally beats me to the bottom of the hill, but my technique is as good as his, so it's all OK. With others, I don't compete - I just do my own thing and let them do theirs'....

Most of my friends that ski are at a somewhat lower level then I am, technically speaking, so if I want to ski with them, I dial it back a bit. But I've done various ski-club trips where somebody makes some smart-alec comment about my speed, technique, etc. And that's when I'll ski balls-to-the-wall for a run or two. If they keep up, great -- I'll ski fast / technical terrain all day. If not, they shut up, generally after a somewhat embarassed "oh".
