hey,
i was wondering what the best spring skiing places are in north america. I'm thinking about taking a trip somewhere around May 15th. What places would still have good skiing and what percentage of each mountain can i expect to be open? Thanks for any info.

Well...

There aren't a lot of places to choose from that late in the year. I believe there are some places open in Colorado. I also think there's still skiing in Whistler-Blackcomb. I know they ski into the summer on the glacier. I don't believe there are any resorts open in the Northeast that late into the season.

Some years Killington will still be open then (usually just Superstar), but that's a long shot this season. There will most likely be some backcountry still in Tuckerman Ravine, but that's a whole 'nother animal.

greg pretty much hit it on the head. i would bet money there will be no lift serviced skiing by may 15th. if killington is open still on may 15th (and they will be the only one that would run lifts that late), then you're only gonna be skiing big bumps on one trail.

spring skiing has pretty much started already at most ski areas. most areas will be packing up shop (those that are still open that is) within the next three weeks.

K didn't look too good for Memorial day a few weeks ago, but I think at this point they'll make it. Of course, only Superstar is what will be offered. Gone are the days of Cascade in the spring :-(

By 5/15 this year, you'll be done here on the East Coast. Head for Summit County in Colorado - about 90 min west of Denver on I-70. The 2 places to check out are Loveland or Arapahoe Basin because they are the highest altitude ski hills immediately around Denver. Another place that's a further drive but could be worth it is Wolf Creek in SW Colorado cuz it's also very high and may still have skiing at that time. Also well-known for summer skiing is the glacier on Mt. Bachelor in Oregon......

I was at Killington on 5/16/02. There was only one trail open, the Superstar. It was top to bottom coverage. It was more of a novelty ski day.

If I was coming on a spring ski vacation in May, I would look to what ChileMass said.

Mamomoth. they ski until june usually and close with ~50% open. i know that this season thay are off to a poor start, but as the saying goes when it rains it pours so... they'll get their's.
also a basin in summit county stays open to june as well.
