We had patrol on Westway last year even though it was closed. Most of the senior management was out there, and we knew a lot of guests were skiing it. I'm not sure we ever actually opened it, but this is Hunter after all....that "closed" sign only matters so much!

Not that I am condoning any of that shady behavior :-o

Bus this weekend?

Separate Hunter question: does anyone know if any of the bus lines from Manhattan will be running this weekend?

Hey,

I have been sking for 2.5 years now and last year made the jump to black terain. However, I have not skied the black stuff at Hunter. How does Hellgate and Minya compare to black/double black terain at say Windham?

Thanks

P.S. - Saddly I cannot get off work for the 12/14 meeting so if there is an AZ Hunter meet up later in the year I will be there.

Never been to Windham, but Hellgate and Minya are somewhat tame as far as (say, Northern New England) black diamonds go, at least in terms of pitch. You can make them challenging by skiing the bumps on the big turns though.

Also, Hellgate is probably the most popular route down from the summit for intermediates besides Belt which can lead to it getting pretty busy. The additional skier traffic can scrape off snow and lead to some hardpack to contend with. Because of this, Hunter is not a great intermediate skier mountain.

The double blacks at Hunter are legitimately challenging trails.

I am not a big fan of bumps. I agree, that Hellgate will be skied off a bit - reminds me of night skiing.

Who else is going to make it out to Hunter this weekend?

All of Hunter West has snowmaking.

There is not snow over on the West side yet.

We will probably move to Way Out in early to mid December, weather permitting. We try to get the front side of the mountain covered before we move to the back.

Despite Hunter's claim of 100%, my kids always like to point out that Lower Taylors has no snowmaking. Although the hoses can reach there, I have never seen it.
