iPhone freezing (literally) issue?

I have an iPhone 5 with an otter box case, when I take it skiing with me, I'm assuming it gets too cold and shuts off after a few hours. It's not that cold, normal 10-20 degree temps you expect while skiing, and I even put it in my inside pocket closest to my body, but it's still freezing.

When I try to turn it on, it gives the icon for the battery being too low, but if I take it in the lodge for just a couple minutes, or warm it up with my breath even, it will turn back on.

Anyone else have an issue with their phone, or am I the only one who takes it with me while skiing?

I bring my phone with me for piece of mind. If something bad happens and I am alone, it can be a huge help.

I had this problem when I would put it in the inside of my shell. It happened every time. I started moving it into the inside of my mid layer (insulating jacket) and haven't had that problem since.

3 thing I noticed when it would get too cold it would shut down:

1) Your phone, even if it is off, will show a dead battery icon if its under 32 degrees for an extended time. It is conserving power.
2) Because of the cold, condensation buildup is possible when it heats back up. This can lead to the dreaded "water damage" issues some people see
3) People might argue it, but I noticed a difference in overall battery performance on normal non-ski days.

I have the iPhone 5 running ios7. I would be curious to see if cold does this to users of a Lifeproof case.

Put the phone in a Zip-Loc baggie and shove it up your ass. Just kidding, I bet it'd work, how about down your pants, get a jock with a pocket for a cup, install phone instead. Microwaves may make you sterile, done having kids? I've got a Droid, needs a new battery, I plan on buying two, charge em both before hitting the slopes. I think your battery life is compromised due to the cold no matter what you do. How about those chemical heating packs? Seems keeping your phone in a pocket with one would help a lot.

Hope this thread doesn't get locked for my first comment, it was a joke.

I've had the same problem with my Razr. Typically when I'm working at the ski are I put the phone in a leg pocket in my ski pants that's just above the knee. This year in particular I've had instances where it went from nearly fully charged to nothing in less than 2 hours. The last week or so I've been wearing a down vest under my work jacket (since it's been on the nippy side). I started putting the phone in one of the vest pockets instead and it's made a huge difference! Now the battery hardly takes a hit at all over the course of a shift. I can still get at it easily by pulling up the bottom of my outer jacket and reaching in the pocket, which is important because I pull the phone out somewhat frequently to check the time and what not. Often the phone is warm to the touch when I pull it out, as opposed to being ice cold like it used to be.

So, yeah, keeping it warm makes a big battery difference.

Throw a hand warmer in the pocket.

A bunch of my iPhone friends stick a toe warmer to the back of their iPhone cases on cold days. Seems to solve the problem for them and the warmer stays put with the adhesive on toe warmers

I can't say that I've had battery issues with my Droid Razr Maxx, even running a GPS tracking app all day with it in an outer chest pocket on my coat, and the only place I use a toe warmer is on my feet! :)

Seconded. I have a Razr too, and I keep it in the inside pocket of my jacket, and never had a problem with the battery.

I have a Droid when it cold out it doesn't like to work to well. I usually stick it in my pocket on right side of coat. Bathroom with blow dryer for hands helps warm the phone up.

Mine was doing that as well. Turns out, it was my battery. Once I put a new battery in (bought one on ifixit.com and it came with tools. The screws are small!) it was working just fine again. I always try to put it in an inside pocket for warmth. I ski with my phone as well. It's how I track my days/runs.

I've always wondered about condensation from warming up too. 3rd season and my 4S is running pretty normal.

I've had the battery issue a few times. I like the idea of using a warmer.
