Neighbor just stated that 1/2 the new snowmakers for Cat/Tash walked out yesterday....

Not surprised from what I've heard re: the new GM's lack of knowledge, except for F&B issues

Ridiculous.....
"As to the snowmakers, they are getting a well-deserved break."

"And now that you mention it, running ski areas is just like running food and beverage! You know, I am a revolutionary in this business. I am to skiing what Ray Kroc was to McDonalds. And who doesn't LOVE McDonalds?"

Is it true Vail is short on snowmakers so they split their time at both Attitash and Wildcat? The worst performing mountains in New England just lost half of their snowmakers? I assume the experienced Mountain Ops crew oversee what the rookies are doing but now they will have to man the trenches. Some corporations intentionally engineer staff shortages because fewer staff = lower wage cost = more profits and bonuses for the suits. The suits make 1 person do 2 people's jobs. Since skier satisfaction is not on Vail's radar in WMV, this could be the explanation. Or it just may be incompetence.
If it is true that they lost half of their snowmaking crew, then that is really bad. It is not like the MWV has a HUGE labor pool and Vail has already driven a lot of them away.

Since they already have the pass money, I really don't think Vail cares if Wildcat makes money or not. either way it's basically a rounding error for them. I feel for the longtime loyal skiers and riders there.
This is the key. This is why cheap pass prices can actually HURT the consumer. There is practically zero incentive to provide a good product. They know exactly how lean they need to run everything to still turn a profit. They know they already have $X.00 income due to pre season “ePiC” sales. Now it is “easy” to calculate how much snow they can make etc… which in the case of Wildcat and Attitash, is next to none.

Could be misremembering, but I could have sworn he said there was a group of locals who made an inquiry to Vail.

Yes, but the point Smelly was making is that eatskisleep was asking where you (or anyone) heard that Vail was interested in selling. Not whether there were offers or people interested in buying. I remember there was serious interest from a group wanting to buy Wildcat, but from what I remember Vail had 0 interest in even entertaining their offer.

You do realize that if they did sell off an area, it would spook investors and the hit to the stock price would likely be greater than the proceeds from the sale of that area yes? There's a group of private investors willing to buy Wildcat and Vail is interested in selling the area. That isn't because it's a cash cow.

Excessive debt would be mostly caused by excessive capital expenditures. I think most folks see Vail not cheaping out on new toys and are happy with their efforts there. They cheap out on operations in many places though. That is what is annoying people. Their operations suck at many places, especially for a company as wealthy as they are
Hunter perfect example.

Sorry guys. I see where the confusion lies. I made a typo responding to Joshua.

"There's a group of private investors willing to buy Wildcat and Vail is interested in selling the area. That isn't because it's a cash cow."

That was supposed to say "isn't"

Ug, CA access only sounds like a shitshow.
That Gondola is a weak link. Winds shut it down all the time and when they do is mass hysteria in stateline.

It looks like theyre gonna bus skiers down to Kirkwood

I don't know much about Heavenly and don't know anything about the logistical issues created by the Gondola closure, but apparently this is the line to get off the mountain last night well after closing. Sounds fun!

Shit Breaks and this is what happens when you have the setup of Heavenly where there is a limited way down to the lake level.
