funny thing about that dump-it was all pretty much gone in about 3 days! what a waste for it not to have gone up furthur north.
It was almost all gone when I got to work on tuesday. I would have volenteered to truck it all up to Hunter.

Last summer, we actually had a 10" deficit heading into October. Of course, one week took care of that. Last summer was incredibly hot. In the '04 summer, it was much cooler than normal and also very rainy. As far as comparisons to 01-02, I don't know if it was only southern NE that got the shaft, but here are the monthly totals for midwinter.

December 2001: 8.2", December 2005: 24.6"
January 2002: 17.1", January 2006: 21.3"
February 2002: 1.8", February 2006: 18.1"
March 2002: 10.4", March 2006: 0" so far

Last fall was the time when all the rain fell. I think I got out mtn biking twice all fall since it rained pretty much daily.

well, it is still raining here in StJ as of tuesday at 7AM which means it pretty much hasn't stopped for 48 hours (though it has been down to a light drizzle at times during that stretch but right now it is coming down pretty good). i think this season is pretty well shot even if we get more snow later this week. this seems like a solid month earlier in the season for this type of rain and loss of trails. i usually enjoy spring skiing but this is getting to be down right depressing and i usually don't consider things spring skiing for another two weeks.

The worst part about this winter was the freeze/thaw repitition. Even after getting a good dump, you were skiing on ice by midday. Looks like we're in for another set of it this week, too. Cannon's going to be one solid glacier if it freezes this week. Not pretty.

Yep, the few good snows were quickly followed by warm temps and rain. Has to be really frustrating for the ski areas. I'm still hoping to get a couple more days in but this coming weekend is out due to other obligations. Unless there is a good snowfall followed by moderate temps, anyplace within driving distance for us is likely to be either closed or have very limited terrain by the time we can get out. Played golf and went for a bike ride last weekend; it was fun but much too early. I'd rather have been skiing.

Hunter's website, which is still claiming an amazing 43 trails as of this morning, has a weather blurb from precisionweather.com that claims things will cool down a lot and stay that way.

I find it hard to believe and I'm not sure it will do much good w/out more natural snow. I doubt anyone is blowing anymore.

time to go west...seems that when the weather sucks here in the east, the west is getting all the snow. Whistler, Tahoe and Utah is getting dumped on. CO is having their 2nd best snow year ever. about the only place that isn;t getting snow is Arizona and they just got some this past weekend finally.

last year, the weather here in the east was about average. there fore it follows that the snowing out west would be below average. I did go to whistler last year and got spring conditions in January....

I skied Jay yesterday, and it was surprisingly good for rain skiing. nobody was on the hill and you could still ski everywhere pretty much. I even skied upper river quai which is usually one of the more bony natural snow trails on the hill, it was getting pretty thin in spots though. a bunch of snow is in the forecast too! i'm getting fired up, still plenty of good skiing left up here. Its too bad to hear the skiing might be coming to a close in the southern areas, sorry guys.

anybody remember January of 1995? biggest thaw I can remember, most areas shut down for a week or so, Jay was left to nothing except the Jet

i don't remember 01-02 being that bad. my trip reports from that year actually show decent coverage with plenty of snow on the natural snow trials, unlike this year. the biggest problem this year was never establishing a natural snow base. the lack of base made it so many trails never setup. here was 01-02 from my perspective, those looked like some pretty darn good days:

02 was a great year. I had a trail map of Sunday River in 2003 that used pics of 02

02 was a season that had a great cap (end) to it with a visit to Tuckermans.

I visited Bozeman in Feb/March Big Sky/Bridger Bowl and the season concluded super with access to glade skiing in the NorthEast (Mt. Sunapee)

Whistler = AN errant golf drive that goes into the woods
Tahoe = Name of a SUV
Getting Dumped = Breaking up
CO = carbon dioxide
Arizona = Non Co2 Fruit drink

Man what are you talking about?

Don't mess with my bubble!

This year is definitely one of the worst, I remember. Main reason: Lack of sustained cold weather. It's the most important thing. These days conditions can be quite good even with a lack of natural snow given snow making, grooming. It all depends on COLD weather. There will always be a few good dumps and of course a few good powder days every season. It's the way the hills ski in between the dumps that really determines what is and what isn't a good season.

All it will do is prolong the season a bit more. Most places close regardless of conditions due to lack of traffic. I've seen Hunter close with ALL 52 trails open and in great condition. It's all about the bottom line. If you really want to extend you're season book trips out west in April or even May. Everything will be super cheap. Tahoe looks like they may have an extended season, but it's too early to tell.

a lot of the western resorts close with full coverage too. i think alta for example is like mid april or something? if you really want to extend your season, you gotta hike... east or west. though the bird going to july 4th last year was something else! but that was a rare exception.

Mad River Glen's website says that they lost alot of cover to the warm weather and rain and may not be able to reopen this weekend, in which case they would close for the season.

If that where to happen, would that be a record early season closing for them?

What a lousy winter for most resorts.
