What does work pretty well...are a few round pieces of neoprene, fitted by creating a hem/ridge and sewing on some stretchy elastic strips around the edges to form the outer ring that'll then stretch around and grip the outer cuffs...to hold throughout the onslaught from snowguns...works great. Just get them large enough so that they get down beyond the buckles...

Damn, silly me, next time I was just thinking of using Glad bags :).

Yep, well...they were pretty cheap locally, picked them up...can't wait to give them a try. I have looked for the newer Scarpas, as well as the Denalis(they would need a lot of bootwork..but not out of mind!..cause they're a nice boot flex-wise!), but haven't found the Spirit 3s....maybe a pair exists over in N.Conway in my size to at least try on...but I'll see how the Trekkers work...from here on till meltdown.

Bummer dude...day late and a dollar short as they say....SteepandCheap had the Scarpa Spirit 3's yesterday for $290. With shipping I got mine for $300. Should have them here mid week....hope they are as good as the reviews i've read...

I'll post a review once I use them. Likely won't be for a couple weeks though..

EDIT: OOPS sorry...looks like you knew that...seems you are smart and actually want to try them on... ;-)

Wait, so you can literally pull into a closed resort, park, and hike up and ski otherwise closed terrain?

Can we compile a list of resorts that allow this, no questions asked?

I do not think there is such a thing as "no questions asked." Any ski area can tell you to take a hike, even areas that have generally been permissible on the issue. Most don't though. Most important thing is to be respectful of the area. Particularly if there are gates or off season maintenance. Park out of the way, if workers are in the area ask them if all is cool, etc. If you have an area in mind and are afraid of driving up and wasting your time, give them a call in advanced and ask if its cool.

Yep... I'll be hiking Mt. Ellen (at the Bush) until there's no line down FIS anymore... which means I may be skiing into the second week of April or more! FIS holds snow like crazy!

Awesome timming on this thread. I'am planning on heading up north next weekend so I hope this keeps running so I can plan exactly where to go. I'm definitly not paying full price for tix. w/ sketchy conditions. If there are discounted tix I'd probally go that route just because it's easier and more time efficient. But I've been considering Tux as well so keep those post's coming... thanx

If you haven't already, try the Garmont AT boots on. The Scarpa fit doesn't match my foot at all, whereas the Garmonts were reasonably close (I went with a smaller size and some boot-fitting work, but I probably could have gotten away with the next size up and almost no fitting work if I wanted).

Re: hiking in ski boots vs. carrying them vs. skinning, I've done all three. In my Adrenalins, hiking in the boots isn't bad at all--the combination of a good walk mode and a rockered, Vibram sole makes them a better all-around winter mountain boot than my hiking boots (e.g. I wear them when hanging around the terrain park to shoot photos, even if I don't have my skis). In normal ski boots, particularly without a walk mode, I definitely prefer carrying the boots and switching from hiking boots to ski boots at the top; this is much easier when there's some form of shelter available while doing so, of course. Managing to get the boots inside the pack rather than hanging off the outside helps quite a bit.

If you do walk up, whether in hiking boots, ski boots, snowboard boots, sandals, whatever, please use snowshoes if you are traveling over snow. Postholing destroys surface conditions for everyone and makes life much more difficult both for the postholer and those who come later, and decent snowshoes are available for less than one SUV tank of gas. If you must posthole, do it single file and stay out of the skin track. Thanks.
