Is there a mountain you wouldn't ski for free?

OldsnowboarderME,

Didn't mean to imply we disliked or wouldn't go to BW. Indeed, we're tentatively planning to go there for our first weekend out this year. I was simply using BW as an example. It is what it is. They do a great job with snowmaking and grooming. It's a great place for cruising. I've always found it to have a friendly vibe and it seems you can always get away from the crowds that might gather near the main lodge. But it also doen'st have sustained steep terrain and I can certainly see why many folks looking for more challenge don't like it. My point was that simple reviews that it's awful or wonderful don't do it (or anywhere else for that matter) justice. A reasonable review requires some background on the reviewer's preferences and skills, and some detail about what the reviewer likes or dislikes.

Vail and Aspen. Too many uppidty yuppies and trend setters for me.

Maybe Aspen Mountain, but Aspen Highlands is an incredible ski area, and at least when I was there, pre-village, it was extremely uncrowded too. While it doesn't have the acres when considered alone, I'd put its terrain up there with any place I've skied (Jackson Hole and Whistler being the ones that matter, though I must disclose I was at Whistler early season and a lot was closed).

You know, I think I'd go anywhere under the right circumstances. If I was in the area and it was midweek with fresh snow and a buddy said, "Hey, let's go ski Mount Loserwood. Oh, and I've got a free ticket for ya," there is no way I could turn that down.

Jeez. Ajax, Highlands, and Snowmass all have excellent skiing. The front of Vail is nothing special but off the back is really nice. Nobody has singled out Deer Valley but that also has great skiing and an extremely wealthy customer base.

The way I look at the question:
If my company had an off-site meeting at any ski area in the world and handed me a lift ticket and told me to go take some runs, I'd go. It wouldn't matter where. If I had to burn vacation time and was paying for transportation and lodging, a free ticket wouldn't be anywhere near as much of an incentive.

I agree. I was responding in the context of the other person's message. I enjoyed all three mountains. Aspen might have the type of crowd he wrote about. I don't care about that. I enjoyed it. I liked Highlands better, both terrain-wise, and because it was empty. I was merely pointing out that even if you take as true and important what the other poster was saying, Highlands doesn't fit within that description. Despite being more crowded than Highlands, Snowmass probably does not fit the description either, for that matter, but I like Highlands better.
