Called our favorite semi-local ski area Laurel Mtn.,PA last night and they told me it was snowing pretty good. They said there was a real good chance for all trails to be open. So with time and money running out on this ski season we decided to do a long day trip(4.5 hours each way). We really love this mountain and its worth the drive. Got up to a little snow on the ground and hit the road by 4:00 am. We had gone about 40 miles and some snow was starting to stick to the road, but it wasn't bad at all. I had just passed a couple of trucks and was getting ready to get back over when we heard "KABOOM!!!" Right rear tire blew. We got over off the to the side okay. We have an S-10 with the spare underneath that I keep a lock on. Of course the lock didn't want to unlock so I hacksawed the cable, which wasn't the most pleasant task laying in the snow under the truck. I keep a saw in the back for just such an occasion. After changing the tire we decided it wouldn't be such a good idea to ride clear to PA and back with no spare, so we turned around and came home. I wanted to torture myself so I got on Laurel's web site and saw that they had 9 inches of freshies with all trails open. Sorry to be such a downer to everyone but I just had to vent and whine to people who share my somewhat out of control addiction to skiing. I'm hoping we get another chance to go this year but I'm not counting on it. Here's to everyone having a better weekend than mine.

I'd ahve gone for it, too. I mean, what are the chance sof having two blowouts? Of course, without a spare, and with my luck, there's nearly a 100% chance I'd have a blowout, so you probably did the right thing.
Does make your Saturday a bit of a bummer, though.

I was soaking wet from laying on the ground. I didn't want to lay on the ground in my ski coat and pants. No extra clothes, and I wasn't positive on the number of trails they had open, didn't know they had gotten 9 inches til we got home. Plus I've got that kind of luck where I didn't want to gamble. But you guys got me second guessing myself now. :-? I guess I'm just too cautious,I should of gone for it!

I'm feeling your pain today. Woke up this morning to water dripping through our ceiling from the apartment above us. There may be no friends on a powder day, but apparently there are still plumbing problems.

On one hand, the chances of having a second flat in one day are pretty poor. How long since your last one?

On the other hand (there are different fingers   ) a piece of buttered toas lands butter side down ~50% of the time... unless it is dropped over a Persian carpet. In that case, it is almost certain.

Sorry for your bad luck.

I've got a similar story. I took Friday March 4 off and was planning on going to the Elk Mountain (PA) Winterfest & demo day. Never having been to one I was excited for WEEKS thinking about it!

Now the bad news...I drove up the night before to my parent's house in Lake Wallenpaupack. Figure it would probably save me over an hour drive the next morning. Since roads looked OK I drove the trusty minivan and of course came around a curve filled with snow and ice and crashed into a snowbank and picket fence...only ONE MILE from my parent's house. I was fine but I needed AAA to tow me back home the next day as the van was undriveable and I was all alone in PA. So much for my Winterfest!

I guess the lesson I learned was to ALWAYS drive the Jeep even if the roads look fine! I guess I'll have to wait to demo skis until next year.

Anyway I feel your pain.

I appreciate all the sympathy. :) It doesn't hurt as bad a few days later, besides next weekend is within sight and I'm hoping we can try again. Won't be any powder but I hope they still have all trails open.

poor choice ... the ski clothes would've kept you dry and maybe thinking more clearly!
Hook yourself up with an auto service club and take the worries out of breaking down ... is your a$$ sore from kicking it over and over yet? :p

Buckeye,
We've all been there.....but you know that had you continued on...at some point you might have, by chance, hit the motha of all potholes...and would've REALLY been stranded for a while....thus killing the day anyways. I probably would've kept on, but being just 40mi out....it wasn't a bad choice.
